Stonehenge is a prehistoric stone circle on Salisbury Plain in southern England, built and rebuilt by Neolithic farming communities over roughly 1,500 years, starting around 3000 BCE. Nobody wrote anything down about it — writing had not reached Britain yet — so everything we know comes from archaeology: bones, tools, soil layers and the stones themselves.

The monument uses two very different rocks. The huge sarsens, some weighing about 25 tonnes, came from the Marlborough Downs about 25 km away. The smaller bluestones travelled roughly 250 km from the Preseli Hills in Wales — an astonishing distance for people with no wheels-and-carts as we know them, no metal tools and no draught animals for the heaviest work. They moved and raised the stones with timber sledges, rollers, rope, earth ramps and the muscle of hundreds of people working together.

As for why: Stonehenge frames the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset, so it worked as a calendar marking the turning points of the year. Evidence also points to it being a burial ground, a gathering place for feasts, and a site connected with healing and ceremony — several jobs at once, not one.
