Who built Stonehenge — and why?

On a windy green field in England stands a ring of enormous stones. Nobody wrote down why they were put there. So we become detectives!

Big clue: Stonehenge is about 5,000 years old. That is older than the pyramids of Giza — and much older than writing reached Britain. So there is no diary telling us the answer.

In this lesson you will meet the builders, lift a giant stone, drag rocks across the country, and catch the sunrise. Ready, detective? 🔍

Who built it?

Not aliens. Not giants. Ordinary people — farmers who lived in Britain long, long ago.

They were Neolithic farmers — "Neolithic" means the New Stone Age. They grew wheat, kept cows and pigs, made pots from clay, and lived in round wooden huts. They had no metal tools, no wheels for carts, no writing.

Archaeologists found their village at Durrington Walls, just 3 km away — with fireplaces, animal bones and rubbish pits from huge feasts. Thousands of people came to help.

The stones came from far away

Stonehenge is made of two very different rocks — and one of them travelled an astonishing distance.

🔵 Bluestones

About 2–4 tonnes each (as heavy as a car or two). They came from the Preseli Hills in Wales — 250 km away. That is like dragging a car all the way from Singapore to Malacca.

🟤 Sarsens

The giants: up to 25 tonnes — heavier than four elephants. They came from about 25 km north. These make the famous tall arches.

Clever trick: The builders carved a bump on top of each standing stone and a matching hole under the top stone, so they clicked together like LEGO. Carpenters used that joint on wood — they copied it into rock!

Guesses for how they raised them: dig a deep hole, tip the stone in with ropes and wooden levers, then pack the hole with rubble. To lift the top stone (called a lintel), they probably built a wooden platform and raised it a little at a time.

Why build it? Clue 1: the Sun ☀️

Stonehenge lines up with the Sun on the two most important days of the year. That cannot be an accident.

Slide the Sun until its beam shines straight through the middle arch — that is the exact line the builders aimed at.

Why did farmers care? With no calendar and no phone, the Sun was the calendar. Midsummer and midwinter told them when to plant, when to harvest, and that long dark days would soon end. Stonehenge worked like a giant stone calendar.

Where did the myths come from? Long ago, people forgot who built it, so they invented explanations — the wizard Merlin, giants, even Romans or Druids (who actually lived thousands of years later). Careful digging by archaeologists gave us the real answer: local farming families.
