The history of the wheel is the story of how a simple round object, first shaped in Mesopotamia around 3500 BCE, grew into one of the most useful inventions ever made. Before wheels, heavy loads had to be dragged across the ground or rolled along logs — slow, tiring work that limited how far goods and people could travel.

The biggest surprise is that the earliest wheels were not built for transport at all. They lay flat and spun clay: the potter's wheel came first. Only around 3200 BCE did people tip the wheel onto its side, thread it onto an axle and fix it under a cart.
