One round idea that changed the whole world.
Look around you right now. Bus tyres. Bicycle wheels. The little wheels under your school bag. Even the fan spinning above your head!
But here is a surprise: for a very long time, people had no wheels at all. Someone had to invent them.
Before wheels, if you wanted to move something heavy, you dragged it. Try it! Drag the stone to the flag with your finger or mouse.

Ancient people had a clever trick: they laid round logs on the ground and rolled heavy stones over them. Rolling is far easier than dragging — but you must keep running to the front to move each log back!
Here is the biggest surprise in this lesson. The very first wheels were not put on carts. Around 3500 BCE in Mesopotamia (today that is Iraq), people invented the potter's wheel — a flat spinning table for shaping clay pots.
A spinning table lets a potter smooth a pot evenly all the way round. That is much faster than pinching clay by hand.
Around 3200 BCE, people finally turned the wheel on its side and put it under a cart. But a wheel needs partners. Tap the three parts below to drop each one into the right slot.
The first cart wheels were solid discs sawn from tree trunks — strong, but very heavy.
Around 2000 BCE, someone had a brilliant idea: remove most of the wood and leave only thin sticks called spokes. The wheel stayed strong but became much lighter — light enough for fast chariots.

For thousands of years wheels were wood, sometimes wrapped in iron. Rides were bumpy! Then in 1888, a Scottish vet named John Boyd Dunlop made an air-filled rubber tyre for his son's tricycle — so the ride would stop rattling.
Air inside the tyre squashes over bumps instead of jolting you. That one idea gave us comfortable bicycles, buses and cars — and it still rolls under every MRT train and aeroplane today.
