How Explorers Mapped The World
The history of world map exploration is the story of how people slowly filled in a blank Earth — replacing guesswork and "here be dragons" with measured coastlines drawn from voyages, instruments and, much later, satellites. For most of history nobody could see the whole planet at once, so every map was stitched together from what sailors, traders and local guides reported back.
The central difficulty was position: to place a coastline on paper, you must know where you are. Step 3: the clock that fixed mapsThe clock that fixed the map ⏰ Sailors could already find how far north or south they were by measuring the height of the sun or the North Star. That is latitude.
