🗺️ How Explorers Mapped The World

Open a map app today and you can see every island on Earth — even the tiny ones near Singapore.

But long ago, nobody had that map. Sailors only knew the bit of sea they had actually visited. Everywhere else was blank paper — and mapmakers sometimes drew sea monsters there, just to fill the space!

So how did we get from blank paper to the whole world?

Problem number one: “Where am I?”

To draw a place on a map, an explorer first had to know where they were. That sounds easy on land — but in the middle of the ocean, every direction looks exactly the same: water, water, water.

The first maps: hug the coast 🏝️

Early explorers were sensible. They sailed with land on one side, close enough to see it. Each day they wrote down what they saw — a bay, a river mouth, a pointy hill — and drew it on paper.

Bit by bit, those little sketches joined up into a coastline. This is exactly how Arab, Chinese, Indian and European sailors mapped the seas around Asia, including the waters around Singapore.

Then came the long voyages 🚢

Once ships got stronger, crews dared to leave the coast behind and cross open ocean. Every voyage brought back new coastlines — and the blank map slowly filled in.

The clock that fixed the map ⏰

Sailors could already find how far north or south they were by measuring the height of the sun or the North Star. That is latitude.

But how far east or west — called longitude — was a nightmare. Ships crashed because of it. The answer turned out to be surprisingly simple: carry a very accurate clock.

The Earth spins once in 24 hours. So every 1 hour of time difference = 15° of longitude. Keep one clock on home time, check the sun for local noon, compare — and you know exactly how far east or west you have sailed.

Maps were a team effort 🤝

We often name one famous captain, but a map needed many people — and lots of them were local. Explorers arriving somewhere new were usually guided by people who had lived and sailed there for generations.

🇸🇬 Singapore fact: our island sits beside the Straits of Malacca, one of the busiest sea roads on Earth. Sailors from China, India, Arabia and Europe all passed through — so this little patch of water appeared on world maps very early.

From wooden ships to satellites 🛰️

For hundreds of years, maps were made from the sea. Then everything changed: people went up instead of along. Planes photographed the ground, and later satellites photographed the whole planet.

Suddenly a mapmaker did not need to sail anywhere — the picture came from space.

Detective rule: on an old map, neat = visited and measured, fuzzy = guessed. The blank spaces tell you where the explorers had not reached yet.
