Telling Time On A Clock

Math Interactive lesson Free to play

Telling time on a clock is the skill of reading an analogue clock face — the circle marked with the numbers 1 to 12 — to work out the hour and the minutes. A clock has two moving hands: the short, fat hand points to the hour, and the long, thin hand points to the minutes. Reading both together gives you the time, such as '3 o'clock' or 'half past 7'.

This is one of the first real-world maths skills Singapore primary children use every day — knowing when school starts, how long until recess, or when a TV programme begins. It builds number recognition, counting in fives, and an early sense of how time is divided.

The key ideas are simple but layered: the hour hand names the hour; the minute hand counts minutes, with each numbered mark worth 5 minutes (5, 10, 15…); when the minute hand points straight up to 12 it is 'o'clock'; and when it points down to 6 it is 'half past' (30 minutes). Put the two hands together and you can read any time on the face.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the hour hand and the minute hand?
The hour hand is short and thick and points to the current hour (the numbers 1 to 12). The minute hand is long and thin and shows the minutes. Because the hands look different, you can always tell which one to read first.
Why does each number on the clock count as 5 minutes?
The clock face is split into 12 large gaps by the numbers, but a full hour has 60 minutes. Sixty minutes shared across 12 numbers gives 5 minutes per number, so the minute hand counts 5, 10, 15, 20 and so on as it moves from number to number.
What does 'half past' mean?
'Half past' means 30 minutes after the hour, which is halfway through that hour. It happens when the minute hand points straight down to the 6. For example, when the hour hand is just past 3 and the minute hand is on 6, the time is half past 3.
How do I know when it is exactly 'o'clock'?
It is 'o'clock' when the minute hand points straight up to the 12, meaning zero extra minutes. You then just read the number the short hour hand points to — for example, hour hand on 8 with the minute hand on 12 is 8 o'clock.
At what age do Singapore children learn to tell time?
Telling time is introduced in the early primary years, around Primary 1 and 2, starting with o'clock and half past before moving on to five-minute intervals. It is part of the MOE primary mathematics syllabus and is reinforced through daily routines at home and in school.
