How The Egyptian Pyramids Were Built
The building of the Egyptian pyramids was a large-scale construction method used around 4,500 years ago in which millions of cut stone blocks were quarried, dragged and stacked into a stepped square tower — all without cranes, iron tools, wheels-on-roads or electricity. The Great Pyramid at Giza, built for the pharaoh Khufu, used roughly 2.3 million blocks averaging about 2.5 tonnes each.
The work broke into repeatable stages. Limestone was cut at nearby quarries with copper chisels and wooden wedges, then loosened along natural cracks; harder granite was pounded out with dolerite stones. Blocks were lashed to wooden sleds and dragged over sand that workers wetted first, because damp sand stops a ridge piling up in front of the sled and roughly halves the pulling force. Ramps of mud brick, sand and rubble carried the loads upward, and each layer was laid as a smaller square platform on top of the one below.
Excavations near Giza uncovered a workers' town with bakeries, breweries and medical care, showing the builders were organised, fed labour teams — not slaves. The pyramid's sides were aligned to true north using star sightings, off by only a fraction of a degree.
