About 4,500 years ago — long before cranes, lorries or electricity — people in Egypt stacked millions of heavy stone blocks into giant triangles that still stand today.

A quarry is a place where stone is dug out of the ground. Egyptian workers had no power tools. They used a clever trick with wood and water.

Why does it work? Dry wood soaks up water and swells. The swelling wood pushes so hard that the rock cracks along a neat line. Clever, right? 🌊
Each block was tied onto a wooden sled and pulled by teams of workers. But dry sand piles up in front of the sled and makes it very hard to pull.
Egyptian paintings show a worker pouring water on the sand in front of the sled. Scientists tested this — damp sand is much easier to slide on!
Slide to change how wet the sand is, then press Pull! Too dry = hard. Too soggy = sticky mud.
You cannot lift a 2.5-tonne block straight up. So builders made long ramps of mud brick, sand and rubble, and dragged the blocks up the slope.

A gentle slope means less pulling force — but a longer walk. Builders also used ramps that wrapped around the pyramid like a spiral staircase, so they didn't need one enormous ramp. 🌀
A pyramid is built like a stack of flat square platforms, each one a little smaller than the one below. Big base first — never the tip first!

People used to think slaves built the pyramids. Archaeologists digging near the Great Pyramid found a whole workers' town — with bakeries, fish bones, beds and even tombs of honour. Slaves would never be buried beside a king.
The builders were paid, well-fed Egyptian workers, organised into named teams — a bit like house teams at your school!

The Great Pyramid's sides point almost exactly north, south, east and west — off by only a tiny fraction of a degree. There were no compasses. So how?
Builders watched the stars and the sun's shadow to find true north, then used ropes with knots to make perfect right angles.
