How Glass Is Made From Sand

Science Interactive lesson Free to play

Glass is a hard, transparent material made by melting sand at very high temperatures and then cooling it into a solid. The main ingredient is silica sand, which is mixed with soda ash and limestone before being heated in a furnace to over 1700ยฐC โ€” far hotter than a kitchen oven. At that heat the sand melts into a thick, glowing-orange liquid called molten glass that behaves a bit like hot honey.

While the glass is still soft, it can be shaped in different ways. Glassblowers blow air through a tube to make bottles and ornaments, while flat window glass is made by floating molten glass on a bed of liquid tin. The shaped glass must then be cooled very slowly in a special oven called a lehr, because cooling too quickly makes it crack.

The key ideas a learner takes away are that everyday glass starts as ordinary sand, that great heat is needed to melt it, that soda ash and limestone help it melt and stay strong, and that slow, careful cooling is what keeps the finished glass from breaking.

Frequently asked questions

What is glass made from?
Glass is made mainly from silica sand, mixed with soda ash and limestone. The soda ash lowers the temperature needed to melt the sand, and the limestone makes the finished glass stronger and more durable.
How hot does sand need to get to turn into glass?
Sand must be heated to over 1700ยฐC in a furnace before it melts into molten glass. That is much hotter than a home oven, which usually reaches only about 250ยฐC.
Why does hot glass have to be cooled slowly?
If glass cools too quickly, the outside hardens while the inside is still hot, creating stress that makes it crack or shatter. Cooling it slowly in a special oven called a lehr lets the whole piece harden evenly and stay strong.
How are glass bottles and windows shaped?
While the glass is still soft and molten, it can be shaped in different ways. Bottles and ornaments are often made by glassblowing โ€” blowing air through a tube to form a hollow shape โ€” while flat window glass is made by floating molten glass on a layer of liquid tin.
Is the glass in my window really made from beach-like sand?
Yes. Clear glass starts as ordinary silica sand, similar to sand at the beach, though factories use specially cleaned sand with few impurities so the finished glass turns out clear instead of cloudy or coloured.
