A camera captures a photo by collecting light that has bounced off an object, focusing it with a lens, and recording it as numbers on an electronic sensor. Every photograph starts outside the camera: the sun or a lamp sends out light, that light strikes a sunflower or a face, and some of it scatters back towards the camera in every direction.

The lens is a curved piece of glass that bends those spread-out rays so they meet again in one sharp point, forming an upside-down image inside the camera body. Behind the lens sits the shutter, a small door that is normally closed. Pressing the button snaps it open and shut in a blink, letting through just the right amount of light — too long and the picture washes out bright, too short and it stays dark.

The light then lands on the sensor, a flat chip covered with millions of tiny squares called pixels. Each pixel measures how much light and what colour it received, and turns that into a number. The camera's small computer arranges those numbers into a grid, adjusts the colours, compresses the file, and saves it. Why do photos come out blurry?
Blur happens when the light landing on the sensor moves while the shutter is still open, so a single pixel collects light from several different points.
