How A Camera Captures A Photo

Tap a button, hear a click, and a moment is saved forever. But what actually happens inside that little box?

Here is the big secret: a camera does not capture things. It captures light.

In the next few steps you will follow one ray of light on its journey — from a sunflower, through a lens, onto a sensor, and into a photo on a screen.

Step 1

Everything you see is bouncing light

The sun (or a lamp) sends out light. That light hits a sunflower and bounces off it in every direction. Some of those bounced rays fly straight into your eye — and some fly into a camera.

That is why you cannot take a photo in a completely dark room: there is no light to bounce!

Step 2

The lens gathers and bends light

The rays arriving at the camera are spread out and messy. The lens is a curved piece of glass that bends every ray so they all meet neatly at one spot inside. We say the picture is in focus.

Fun fact: because of the bending, the picture lands inside the camera upside down! The camera flips it back for you. 🙃

Step 3

The shutter opens for a blink

Inside the camera is a tiny door called the shutter. It is normally shut. When you press the button, it snaps open and closed — often faster than you can blink. That is the click sound!

While the door is open, light pours in. How long it stays open really matters:

Why do night photos go blurry?

At night there is very little light, so the shutter must stay open longer to collect enough. If your hands wobble even a little during that long open time, the picture smears. That is why photographers use a tripod! 📐

The sensor turns light into numbers

The sensor is a flat chip covered in millions of tiny light-counting squares called pixels. Each pixel asks one simple question: how much red, green and blue light landed on me?

It writes the answers down as numbers. A photo is really a giant grid of numbers — and a screen turns those numbers back into colours.

Only 64 pixels here — a real phone camera has over 12 million. That is why photos look so smooth!

Step 5

From numbers to a picture you can share

The camera's little computer takes all those numbers, tidies up the colours, squeezes the file smaller so it does not hog space, and saves it as a photo file. Then you can see it, print it, or send it to Ah Ma. 👵
