Why the Dinosaurs Disappeared
Dinosaur extinction is the disappearance of almost all dinosaur species about 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period, in a mass extinction that wiped out roughly three out of every four kinds of living things on Earth. The leading explanation is an asteroid about 10 km wide that struck shallow sea near what is now Chicxulub in Mexico, throwing dust and soot high enough to spread around the whole planet.
What killed most dinosaurs was not the impact itself but what followed.
