Tree rings are the concentric circles you see on the flat top of a cut tree stump or a sawn log. Each ring is a single year of growth: as a tree grows, it adds a fresh layer of wood just under its bark every year, so one ring equals one year of the tree's life. Counting the rings from the centre outwards tells you roughly how old the tree is.

The rings are not all the same width, and that is what makes them interesting. In a warm, wet, sunny year a tree grows quickly and forms a wide, fat ring; in a cold or dry year it grows slowly and forms a thin, skinny ring. Because of this, the pattern of rings acts like a diary of the weather the tree lived through.

Scientists called dendrochronologists study these ring patterns to work out the age of trees and to learn about past climates, droughts and even the age of old wooden buildings. Tree rings connect simple counting and observation to real science about plants, seasons and how living things record the world around them.
