How Seeds Travel And Grow
Seed dispersal is the way plants move their seeds away from the parent plant so they can land somewhere new and grow. Because a plant cannot walk, it relies on outside help โ mainly wind, water, animals, and the plant's own exploding seed pods โ to scatter its seeds. If every seed simply dropped straight down, the young plants would be crammed together, all fighting for the same sunlight, water, and soil, so travelling gives each seed a better chance to survive.
There are four main methods. Wind carries very light seeds fitted with tiny 'parachutes' or 'wings', like the dandelion and the angsana. Water floats seeds such as the coconut, which can bob across the sea to a new shore. Animals help in two ways โ hooked seeds cling to fur, while seeds inside tasty fruit are eaten and dropped elsewhere. A few plants have pods that burst open and fling their seeds away.
By learning seed dispersal, a child understands why seeds have different shapes, how plants spread to new places, and how a single seed grows into a plant when it finds warm soil, water, and sunlight.

Why seeds travel๐ฑ๐ฟ๏ธ๐จ Why do seeds go on a journey? Every big tree started as a tiny seed. But here is a puzzle: if a seed just dropped straight down under its parent plant, it would grow in the shade, fight for water, and get crowded out. So plants have clever ways to send their seeds far away to find their own sunny spot with space, light and water. This is called seed dispersal. In this lesson you'll blow a seed in the wind, sort seeds by how they travel, and grow a seed into a plant. Tap Next to begin! ๐

Travel by wind1. Riding the wind ๐จ Some seeds are super light or have tiny "parachutes" or "wings" so the wind can carry them. Think of a dandelion or the helicopter seeds of an angsana tree. Give it a puff of wind! ๐จ Blow the wind Light seed + parachute = the wind does the carrying. Neat trick, right?
-
Travel by water2. Floating on water ๐ Seeds that grow near rivers, drains or the sea can float and drift to a new place. The giant coconut is the champion โ it can bob across the ocean for weeks and still grow! Which of these is best at travelling by water? Tap your choice. ๐ปSunflower seed ๐ฅฅCoconut ๐Apple pip A coconut has a thick, air-filled husk โ like a built-in life jacket that keeps it floating.
-
Travel by animals3. Hitching a ride on animals ๐ฟ๏ธ Animals help seeds in two clever ways. Tap each card to discover how! ๐ฆ Sticky hooks Some seeds have tiny hooks or spikes that stick to fur, feathers or even your socks. The animal walks away and drops them somewhere new. Tap! ๐ฆ Tasty fruit A bird eats a juicy berry. The soft part is digested, but the hard seed comes out later in the bird's poo โ far away, with its own natural fertiliser! Tap! Have you ever picked prickly seeds off your clothes after a walk? You were helping a plant travel!
-
Travel by exploding4. Popping and exploding! ๐ฅ A few plants don't wait for wind or animals. When their dry seed pods get ripe, they burst open and fling seeds away, like a mini catapult! The saga tree and pea pods do this. A ripe, dry pod... ๐ฅ Snap the pod!

Match the travellerSort the seed travellers ๐งฉ Drag each seed to the way it travels. On a tablet you can also tap a seed, then tap a box. ๐ช Dandelion (light + parachute) ๐ฅฅ Coconut (floats) ๐ฆ Burr (sticky hooks) ๐ซ Pea pod (bursts) ๐จWind ๐Water ๐ฟ๏ธAnimal ๐ฅExplosion Tip: tap a seed to pick it up, then tap the matching box.

From seed to plantThe seed finds a home and grows ๐ฟ Once a seed lands in warm soil with water and sunlight, it wakes up and grows. Tap the button to watch it happen, step by step. ๐ฑ Grow the next step Stage: a resting seed in the soil.

You did it!๐ You're a seed-travel expert! Great work! Let's recap the four ways seeds travel: ๐จ Wind โ light seeds with parachutes or wings (dandelion, angsana) ๐ Water โ floating seeds drift to new shores (coconut) ๐ฟ๏ธ Animals โ sticky hooks catch a ride, or fruit is eaten and seeds dropped later ๐ฅ Explosion โ dry pods burst and fling seeds away (saga tree, pea pod) And remember why: travelling helps a seed find its own space, light and water โ then with warm soil it grows roots, a stem, and leaves into a brand-new plant. ๐ณ Next time you're outside in Singapore, look for a floating seed in a drain, a par
Frequently asked questions
- What are the four main ways seeds are dispersed?
- Seeds are mainly spread by wind, by water, by animals, and by the plant's own exploding seed pods (self-dispersal). Each method suits a different type of seed.
- Why don't plants just drop their seeds straight down?
- If seeds fell right under the parent plant, all the seedlings would be overcrowded and compete for the same sunlight, water, and space. Spreading out gives each seed a better chance to grow.
- How does a coconut travel to a new place?
- A coconut is dispersed by water. Its thick, hollow husk lets it float, so it can drift along rivers or bob across the sea until it washes up on a new shore and grows.
- How do animals help seeds travel?
- In two ways: some seeds have tiny hooks or spikes that stick to an animal's fur and drop off later, and other seeds are inside fruit that animals eat, then pass out in their droppings somewhere else.
- What does a seed need to start growing after it lands?
- A seed needs warm soil, water, and sunlight. When these conditions are right, the seed germinates โ it sends out a root and a shoot and slowly grows into a new plant.
