A search engine is a program that gathers pages from across the web, records what is on them, and then orders the matches so the most useful ones appear first. It answers a question in four steps — crawling, indexing, querying and ranking — and all four happen in the fraction of a second between pressing Enter and seeing results.

Crawlers (also called spiders or bots) open a page, read it, then follow every link to reach new pages, repeating this billions of times. The engine writes down which words appear on which page; that list is the index, much like the index at the back of a textbook. When you type a query, the engine never re-reads the web — it looks your words up in the index, then ranking decides the order, favouring pages that genuinely answer the question, are easy to read, and are linked to by other trusted sites.

Knowing this makes a child a sharper searcher: choose precise words, look past the first result, and check who wrote a page before believing it.

How does a search engine find a page it has never seen before?
It follows links. A crawler already visiting a known page reads every link on it and queues those addresses to visit next, so a brand-new page is usually discovered because an existing page links to it. Site owners can also submit a sitemap to speed this up.
What is the difference between crawling and indexing?
Crawling is the visiting step — a bot opens pages and follows links to discover what exists. Indexing is the note-taking step — the engine stores which words and topics appear on each page so it can be looked up later without re-reading the whole web.
Does the first result always mean it is the correct answer?
No. Ranking predicts which page is most likely to be useful for your words; it is not a fact-check. A page can rank first and still be outdated, biased or plainly wrong, so it is worth comparing two or three sources and checking who published them.
Why do the same search words sometimes give different results?
Ranking takes into account things like your location, language and device, and the index itself keeps changing as crawlers find new or updated pages. Two people in different places, or the same person searching a week later, can therefore see a different order.
How can my child search more effectively for schoolwork?
Use specific words rather than a whole sentence — 'water cycle evaporation P4' works better than 'tell me about water'. Then scan a few results instead of clicking only the first, and prefer pages that name an author or organisation.
