Timekeeping before clocks is the practice of measuring the day by watching something that changes at a steady, predictable rate — the sun's shadow, water dripping from a bowl, sand falling through a narrow neck, a candle burning down, or stars moving across the night sky. For thousands of years, from ancient Egypt and Babylon to imperial China, Greece and Rome, this was the only way to know when to work, pray, trade or sail.

These methods fall into two families. Sun clocks, such as a shadow stick or a sundial with marked hour lines, tell you the time of day, but only while the sun is out — no use at night or during a Singapore thunderstorm. Flow clocks, such as water clocks, hourglasses and candle clocks, measure how much time has passed, and keep working in the dark or indoors.

The key idea is that every clock, ancient or modern, does one job: it finds a repeating steady process and counts it. Shadows and dripping water gave way to swinging pendulums, vibrating quartz crystals and finally atomic clocks — but the underlying trick never changed.
