How Frogs Grow From Tadpoles
The frog life cycle is the series of changes a frog goes through as it grows from an egg into an adult, moving through four main stages: egg, tadpole, froglet, and adult. Because a frog's body changes shape so dramatically along the way, this transformation is a classic example of metamorphosis — the same process that changes a caterpillar into a butterfly.
A female frog lays clumps of jelly-covered eggs (called spawn) in water. Each egg hatches into a tadpole, a tiny swimmer that breathes through gills, has a long tail, and mostly eats plants like algae. As the tadpole grows, it sprouts back legs then front legs, its tail shrinks and is absorbed, and its gills are replaced by lungs — this in-between stage is the froglet. Finally it becomes an adult frog that can hop on land and breathe air, ready to lay eggs of its own.
Understanding the frog life cycle helps learners grasp bigger science ideas: metamorphosis, how animals adapt to living in both water and on land, and why frogs need clean ponds to survive. It is part of the Singapore primary science 'life cycles' topic.

Well Done!🐸Hooray — You Did It! You followed a frog through its whole life cycle. Here's the big picture: 🥚 Egg — jelly eggs (spawn) float in the pond. 🐟 Tadpole — hatches, swims with a tail, breathes with gills. 🦎 Froglet — grows back legs then front legs; tail shrinks. 🐸 Adult frog — hops on land, breathes air with lungs, lays new eggs. …and the cycle begins all over again! 🔁 🥚 Egg🐟 Tadpole🦎 Froglet🐸 Frog Next time you see a frog by a pond in Singapore, you'll know exactly how it got there. Great learning! 🌟
Frequently asked questions
- What are the 4 stages of a frog's life cycle?
- The four stages are egg, tadpole, froglet, and adult frog. The cycle repeats when the adult frog lays new eggs in water.
- How does a tadpole turn into a frog?
- A tadpole slowly grows its back legs first, then its front legs. Its tail shrinks and is absorbed by the body, and its gills are replaced by lungs so it can breathe air and live on land.
- Why do frogs lay their eggs in water?
- Frog eggs and young tadpoles have no lungs and breathe using gills, so they must stay in water. The water also keeps the jelly-covered eggs moist and protects them from drying out.
- What do tadpoles eat?
- Young tadpoles mostly eat plants such as algae in the pond. As they grow into froglets and adults, they switch to eating small insects and other tiny animals.
- Is the frog life cycle an example of metamorphosis?
- Yes. A frog changes body shape completely as it grows from a tailed, water-breathing tadpole into a legged, air-breathing adult, and this dramatic transformation is called metamorphosis.
