How Does Rice Grow?
Rice is a cereal grain grown from the seed of the rice plant (Oryza sativa), a tall grass that farmers raise in flooded fields called paddies. What we scoop into a bowl of chicken rice or nasi lemak starts as a single seed β an uncooked rice grain is really the seed itself. The paddy's standing water keeps weeds down and gives the young plants the steady moisture they need.
Rice grows in four main stages. A seed sprouts in warm water; the young seedlings are moved into the flooded paddy and planted in neat rows; the plants then grow for about three to four months, needing plenty of sun, water, warmth and time; finally, when the plants turn golden they are harvested, and the grains are dried before being milled into the rice we eat.
Understanding how rice grows connects an everyday food to real farming, weather and geography β key ideas in primary Science and a reminder of where the food on a Singapore plate comes from.

It starts with a seedStep 1: A tiny seed sprouts π± Every rice plant begins as a single seed (this is what an uncooked rice grain really is!). With warm water, it wakes up and sprouts a little green shoot. π§ Add warm water Tap the button to help the seed sprout.

Planting in the paddyStep 2: Plant the seedlings πΎ When the seedlings are a few weeks old, farmers gently move them into the flooded paddy field. They plant them in neat rows so each plant has room to grow. Tap the 4 empty spots in the water to plant a seedling. Planted: 0 / 4

What rice needs to growStep 3: Sun, water, warmth & time βοΈ Now the rice grows tall over about 3 to 4 months. Tap each card to reveal what a rice plant needs. Tap all 4 cards to see the secret ingredients!
-
Harvest timeStep 4: Harvest & drying πΎβ‘οΈπ When the plant turns golden, it is ready! Farmers cut the plants and collect the grains. This is called the harvest. β‘οΈ β¨οΈ The grains are dried in the sun, then the hard outer shell (the husk) is removed. What's left is the rice we cook and eat!

- How long does rice take to grow?
- After the seedlings are planted, a rice plant takes about three to four months to grow tall and turn golden before it is ready to harvest.
