Cactus des​ert survival refers to the set of physical adaptations that let cacti live where rainfall is rare, daytime heat is extreme, and the ground is dry sand. Instead of the broad leaves most plants use, a cactus is built to capture water quickly, store it, and lose as little of it as possible.

Five features do most of the work. A thick, waxy skin seals the surface so water cannot escape into the hot air. A fat, fleshy stem acts as a water tank, swelling when rain arrives. Spines replace leaves, cutting water loss (and deterring thirsty animals) while the green stem takes over food-making. Wide, shallow roots spread just under the sand to soak up brief rain before it drains away. Ribbed, accordion-like folds let the body expand and shrink as water levels rise and fall.
