Read the passage and answer the question. Passage: "You're not going to Detroit until I say so — and that's not until you're a man. You're not a man now!" Earl's father had argued. "I won't let you go!" It was dark in the coal mine where Earl and his father were working. They refused to speak to each other. Earl could not convince his father that he could get a well-paid job at Detroit. Yet, he could understand his father's anger. His two older brothers had long ago left that grey, lonely place where there was enough work to last only three or four months of the year. Earl and his father had been working together ever since Earl was sixteen. The two men began to shovel coal into the first car. They had always worked at a certain speed. As Earl's father shovelled the coal, he suddenly changed that speed. He started to shovel very fast — much faster than ever. At first Earl thought his father was taking out his anger on the coal so he had to work very fast to keep pace with his father. They quickly filled the first car. Then they pulled another empty car and began loading it very quickly again. When they began shovelling again, Earl's father worked even faster than before. His father smiled. Earl knew then that his father was merely trying to prove that his son was not a man yet. It was a competition. Eager to prove his father wrong, Earl began shovelling faster. Neither of them stopped to drink. They did not stop to wipe the sweat from their faces. They were loading the coal into the cars as fast as they could. Earl wished his father would rest so that he could rest too. However, his father did not stop. "Tired?" Earl's father asked after a while. "I'm just getting started," Earl answered. On the contrary, Earl's body was aching badly. His mouth was dry. After a while, Earl began to lose control over his body. His arms felt weak. He's going to beat me, Earl thought. He's going to beat me! If he does, he knows I will not leave home. He knows I will not go because it would look like I was running away. So Earl kept going on. One more shovel, he said to himself over and over again. The ones became tens. The tens became hundreds. Still his father showed no sign of letting up. Then Earl saw that the pace was slowing. He looked at his father. Earl could see that his father was slowing down. His father was no longer smiling. His mouth was open, and he was gasping for air. Earl knew then he could win! He pushed his shovel into the coal. His father and the other miners watched. Very painfully and slowly, Earl raised the shovel and held it for a few seconds. He wanted to make sure his father understood that he was still able to empty the shovel into the car. Then Earl let the shovel fall to the ground. The miners began to move quietly away. Question: Why did Earl and his father stop speaking to each other?

Read the passage below carefully and answer the question in complete sentences. Passage: It was about 11 am. Captain Ambler sat in our teacher's chair and went through the pile of report books. For some odd reason, my book was on top of the pile. He called my name. I stood at my desk at attention. He said in his loud military voice, "So, you can work, but you are lazy, eh?" That question did not call for a reply. "My boy," the Principal bawled, "go to my office. Next to my desk is a wooden cabinet. Open it. In it, find the magic wand you like best and bring it back to me." I did not need any prodding. I stepped quickly out of my class and headed to his office, my heart palpitating wildly. In the office, I found the mahogany wooden cabinet just as the Principal had directed. I opened it. In it were six canes of various thickness, from the girth of one's smallest finger to one's fat thumb. What a decision to make! I turned to the Principal's clerk, a Chinese gentleman called Mr Lim, and asked, "Mr Lim, which of these canes will give me the least pain?" The clerk smiled and said, "Shut your eyes and pick any one. It won't make any difference." I protested mildly, mumbling that I had heard from other mischievous boys that the thicker the cane, the less the pain. By the time I returned with the cane, there were about seven others who had been asked to come up and form a line. I was asked to join the line at the front. I was asked to take the spot, bend down and touch my toes. I was not much of a gymnast and could not touch my toes easily. The Principal was not going to be sidetracked. Like a first-rate magician, he pressed the back of my neck with his magic wand to make me bend down more and more, until my buttocks stuck out like the peaks of the Himalayas. Then, without even so much as an "Alakazam", he brought the cane down. I almost collapsed. At that very moment, Captain Ambler called, "Next." It was the most happy word I had heard till that moment, for it meant that I was qualified for only one stroke. I walked back to my desk. When I sat on the hard wooden chair, I shot back up into the air. The pain was an excruciating, burning sensation. Instinctively, I pressed my hands on the seat and pretended to sit, remaining in that position till the pain subsided. I would never forget all that had happened on that day. That one stroke of the magic wand helped me turn 180 degrees. All my extra-curricular activities were put on hold. It was study, study and study almost round the clock. When the results of the following term came in, there was nothing in it to make me qualify for another stroke. I did well enough to push myself to the next level the following year.
