Your P4 child can do the sums. Then a word problem lands — “Ali had 3 times as many marbles as Siti…” — and the pencil stops. That gap isn’t arithmetic. It’s heuristics: the problem-solving patterns MOE expects from Primary 4 onward, when word problems stop being one-step and start hiding the question two layers deep.
Here are the seven that matter most, and the part tuition rarely drills — knowing which one to reach for.
1. Draw a Model (the bar model)
The flagship Singapore method. Quantities become bars; relationships become lengths. “3 times as many” is just three equal bars next to one. The moment a child draws it, the unknown becomes visible.
Push your child to draw before calculating. The bar isn’t decoration — it’s the thinking. Kids who skip it on “before-and-after” problems almost always go wrong.
2. Work Backwards
When a problem gives the end and asks for the start — “after spending $8 and giving away half, she had $6 left” — reverse every step. Add back what was subtracted, multiply back what was divided.
P4 children find this counter-intuitive because school maths runs left to right. Practising it explicitly is the fastest unlock for “I don’t even know where to begin” problems.
3. Guess and Check
Underrated and exam-legal. For problems with two conditions (chickens and rabbits, 35 heads and 94 legs), a structured table of guesses converges fast. The skill is making the table, not random stabs — each guess should narrow the range.
4. Look for a Pattern
Number sequences, dot-arrangement questions, “the 50th figure” tile problems. The child writes out the first few terms, spots what’s repeating or growing, then generalises. This is also the gateway to early algebra in P5–P6.
5. Make a Systematic List
“How many ways can you make 50 cents?” Listing randomly guarantees missed combinations. Listing in order — largest coin first, then next — guarantees every case. Order is the whole trick.
6. Restate / Simplify the Problem
Big ugly numbers freeze kids. Teach them to mentally swap in small ones: solve it with 2 and 4 first, see the structure, then put the real numbers back. Same logic, no panic.
7. Units and Parts
The P4 bridge to ratio. “2 parts blue to 3 parts red, 20 marbles total” — find one part (4), then scale. Master this and P5 fractions and ratio stop being scary.
The Real Skill: Choosing the Right One
Any tuition centre can teach the seven. What separates a confident solver is selection — reading a problem and knowing it’s a work-backwards, not a guess-and-check. That judgement only comes from doing many varied problems and getting an immediate, gentle “why did you pick that?” — not a tick a week later.
This is exactly where most P4 kids get stuck. They’ve memorised the bar model but can’t recognise when it applies. Working through assessment books alone, the feedback loop is broken: by the time a parent marks it, the child has forgotten their own reasoning.

What Actually Helps a P4 Child at Home
Three habits beat another worksheet pack:
- Draw first, calculate second. No bar, no working. Make it a rule.
- Ask “which heuristic?” out loud before solving. Naming it builds the selection muscle.
- Let them struggle for two minutes before stepping in. Heuristics are learned by reaching, not by being shown the answer.
