Playing the Bass Guitar
The bass guitar is a low-pitched string instrument, usually with four thick strings tuned E, A, D and G, from the thickest and lowest sound to the thinnest and highest. It is played mainly by plucking the strings with the fingers of one hand while the other hand presses (frets) the strings against the neck to choose each note. The bass produces the deep, rumbling sounds you can often feel as much as hear.
In a band, the bass guitar links the rhythm and the melody: it locks in with the drums to keep everyone in time and outlines the chords that the guitar and singer play over. A repeating pattern of bass notes is called a bassline, and a steady, well-timed bassline is what makes music feel like it has a solid foundation and a groove.
Key ideas a beginner learns include the names of the parts (headstock, neck and body), the four string names in order, the teamwork between the fretting hand and the plucking hand, keeping a steady four-beat count, and building a simple bassline by playing notes in a chosen order.

Meet the bass🎸🔊 Boom! Meet the Bass Guitar The bass guitar makes the low, deep sounds in a song — the part you feel in your tummy when music plays. It has 4 thick strings (a normal guitar has 6 thinner ones). In this lesson you'll learn its parts, its strings, and play your first beat! Tip Tap, drag and play your way through — there's no way to "lose". 🎉

Frequently asked questions
- What is a bass guitar and how is it different from a normal guitar?
- A bass guitar is a string instrument that plays low, deep notes, usually with four thick strings. A regular guitar normally has six thinner strings and plays higher notes and chords, while the bass focuses on the low foundation of a song.
- What are the four bass strings called?
- From the thickest string (lowest sound) to the thinnest (highest sound), the four strings are named E, A, D and G.
- What does a bass guitar do in a band?
- The bass holds a song together by working with the drums to keep the beat steady and by playing notes that match the chords. This gives the music its deep, solid foundation.
- Is the bass guitar a good instrument for a child to start with?
- Yes. Basslines are often simple, repeating patterns, so beginners can play along to real songs quite quickly, and having only four strings can feel less crowded than a six-string guitar.
- What is a bassline?
- A bassline is simply a series of bass notes played in a chosen order and rhythm. Many famous songs are built on short basslines that repeat over and over.
