Out in space there is something so powerful that not even light can escape it. Scientists call it a black hole.

By the end you will know what a black hole is, how it forms, and why it is so amazing. No spacesuit needed!
Gravity is the invisible pull that holds things down. It keeps your feet on the ground and the Moon near Earth.
The heavier and more squished something is, the stronger its pull. Tap each object to feel its gravity. 👇

A black hole is often born when a very big star runs out of fuel. The star can no longer hold itself up, so it collapses — squishing all its weight into a tiny point.
A black hole is not a hole in the ground — it is a place where so much stuff is packed so tightly that gravity becomes incredibly strong.
To leave a planet, a rocket must go fast enough. A black hole's pull is SO strong that you'd need to go faster than light — and nothing is faster than light!
That's why it looks black: no light comes back out. Slide to choose a speed, then press Fire! 🔦
Around every black hole is an invisible edge called the event horizon. Stay outside and you are safe. Cross inside and there is no coming back!
Drag each space object to where it belongs. Try them all! 🛸
Anything that crosses the event horizon is pulled in forever — even light. Spooky but true!
Some black holes are small, and some are gigantic. A giant one sits in the middle of our galaxy, the Milky Way!
Match each black hole to the right size. Tap your answer. 🔭
In 2019, scientists even took the first ever photo of a black hole's glowing ring. Cool!
You now know what a black hole is. Here's your space badge of knowledge:
