Every flying machine fights a tug-of-war with four forces. Early inventors crashed because they only understood one or two of them.

Flying did not happen all at once. It took 120 years of clever ideas — each one built on the last.
🎈 1783 · Hot-air balloon — In France, the Montgolfier brothers sent people up under a huge cloth bag of hot air. It floated, but it could not be steered.
🪂 1853 · Gliders — In England, George Cayley worked out the four forces and built a glider that carried a man across a valley. No engine — just wings.
🛩️ 1903 · The aeroplane — In America, Wilbur and Orville Wright added an engine and steering. Their Flyer flew for 12 seconds.
🚀 1969 · To the Moon — Only 66 years later, humans landed on the Moon. That is less than one grandparent’s lifetime!

A flat board does not fly well. A wing works because its top is curved. Air rushing over the curved top has further to travel, so it thins out and presses down less — and the fatter air underneath pushes the wing up.

Many inventors built wings. The Wright brothers’ genius was control. They fixed bicycles, so they knew a machine must be balanced and steered by the pilot, not left to luck.
They gave the Flyer three ways to turn. Tap each glowing part of the plane to see what it does.

On a cold, windy beach at Kitty Hawk, Orville lay flat on the wing and the Flyer rose into the air. It flew 36 metres in 12 seconds — shorter than a badminton court, but it was the first powered, controlled flight.

The Wrights did not get it right the first time. They built a small wind tunnel in their bicycle shop and tested over 200 wing shapes. Every failure told them something useful.
That habit — test, learn, try again — is the real invention.

Try this at home 🛠️ Fold two paper planes — one with flat wings, one with slightly curved wings. Fly each one three times and measure the distance. Which shape wins? You have just run your own wind-tunnel test, exactly like the Wright brothers.
