Optical Illusions: How Eyes Get Tricked

Your eyes send pictures to your brain. But your brain does not just copy the picture — it guesses what things mean. Usually the guess is right. Sometimes the guess is wrong, and that is an optical illusion.

Trick 1 · Size

Which orange circle is bigger?

Look at the two orange circles below. One is surrounded by big grey circles, the other by small grey ones. Tap the orange circle you think is bigger.

Your brain compares things to their neighbours, not with a ruler. Next to big friends, something looks small. Next to small friends, the very same thing looks big!
Trick 2 · Length

Arrows that stretch a line

Both blue lines below are lines with arrow tips. One line has tips pointing out ▷◁, the other has tips pointing in ◁▷. Drag the slider to make the top line look the same length as the bottom one.

Top line: 146 units  ·  Bottom line: 180 units
Arrow tips pointing outwards pull your eyes outwards, so the line feels longer. This is the Müller-Lyer illusion, and it fools almost everybody.
Trick 3 · Brightness

Two greys that refuse to match

Square A looks dark. Square B looks light. But they are painted with the exact same grey! Your brain knows B is in a shadow, so it silently "brightens" B to guess its real colour.

Try both buttons! When the shadow disappears — or when a bar of the same grey connects A to B — your brain stops guessing and you finally see the truth.
Trick 4 · Meaning

Duck… or rabbit?

Sometimes a picture has two possible answers, and your brain has to choose one. It cannot see both at the same time — it flips between them, like a switch.

There is no wrong answer here! The drawing never changes — only your brain's guess changes. Look again and try to flip to the other animal. 🔁
Trick 5 · Movement

A picture that seems to move

Nothing on this slide is moving. Really! But when your eyes make tiny jumps across a busy pattern, your brain reads those jumps as movement.

Stare at the middle. Do grey blobs flicker at the crossings? 👻

This is the Hermann grid. Look straight at any one crossing and the blob vanishes — because the trick only happens at the edge of where you are looking.

Your brain takes shortcuts

Your eyes send about 10 million tiny signals every second. That is far too much to check one by one — so your brain uses fast shortcuts. Match each illusion to the shortcut that caused it.
