A touchscreen is not just glass. Under the glass there is a see-through grid of wires, thinner than a hair. You can't see them, but they are there — like invisible graph paper.

The wires carry a tiny amount of electricity. It is far too small to feel — but the phone watches it very, very carefully, thousands of times every second.
Here's the surprise: you are part of the circuit! Your body is mostly water and salt, and that lets tiny electric charges move through it.
When your finger comes close, it pulls a small amount of charge away from the wires at that exact spot. The phone notices the change and says: "Someone is touching HERE."
