How would the words travel to her? 🤔
For thousands of years, people solved this puzzle in clever ways — with legs, smoke, birds, wires and radio waves.

The oldest way to send a message was the simplest one: somebody carried it. A runner memorised the words, or carried a letter, and ran.

Some empires built relay stations: a fresh horse and rider waited every few kilometres, so the message never stopped moving. Clever — but a letter from Singapore to London could still take months by ship. 🚢
Running is slow. But light and sound travel fast. So people sent signals instead of words: smoke puffs from a hilltop, beating drums, ringing bells, or a flag waved from a tower.
The catch? Everyone had to agree beforehand what each signal meant. That agreement is called a code.

Signals were fast but could only say a few agreed things — and rain, fog or wind could ruin the message. ☁️
Homing pigeons have an amazing talent: no matter where you take them, they can fly straight back home. So people wrote a tiny note, rolled it up, tied it to a pigeon's leg and let it go.

Pigeons flew about 80 km in one hour — far faster than a runner. But there was one big problem: a pigeon only flies home. It cannot fly wherever you choose, and it cannot bring a reply back to you.
About 180 years ago everything changed. People strung long metal wires between cities and pushed little bursts of electricity down them. This machine was called the telegraph.
Electricity cannot carry words by itself — so Samuel Morse invented a code of short beeps (dots ·) and long beeps (dashes –). Every letter got its own pattern.
