From Cave Walls to Keyboards ✍️

Writing is a way of freezing your voice so it can travel — across a room, across the world, or across thousands of years.

Someone pressed a hand here about 35,000 years ago. No name, no words — but the message still works: “I was here.”

Step 1 · about 35,000 years ago

Pictures: draw exactly what you mean 🖐️

The first “writing” was pictures. Want to say bison? Draw a bison. It works because a picture looks like the real thing, so anybody can read it.

Your turn: a hunter painted this wall to say “Three deer near the river.” Tap every deer you can find — and nothing else.

The problem 🤔 Pictures are great for things you can see. But how do you draw “tomorrow”, “brave”, or your friend’s name? You can’t. People needed something better.
Step 2 · about 5,300 years ago

Cuneiform: writing to count sheep 🐑

In Mesopotamia (today’s Iraq), traders needed records: who owes how much barley? They pressed a cut reed into soft clay, making little wedge shapes. This is cuneiform — the world’s oldest known writing.

Be the scribe: a farmer delivered 7 jars of barley. Stamp that many wedges into the clay tablet, then press Check tablet.

Clever, but heavy. Cuneiform used hundreds of signs, so only trained scribes could read it — and every “page” was a brick you had to carry! 🧱
Step 3 · about 3,800 years ago

The alphabet: sounds, not things 🔤

Here comes the greatest shortcut in history. Instead of a sign for every word, the Phoenicians used a sign for every sound. About 22 letters could spell anything — even words nobody had invented yet.

Step 4 · about 570 years ago

Printing: copy once, share thousands 📚

For centuries every book was copied by hand — one book could take a monk a whole year. Then Johannes Gutenberg built a press with movable metal letters. (In China, printing with carved blocks and movable type came even earlier!)

Why it mattered. Cheap books meant ordinary people could learn to read. Ideas began to spread faster than any king could stop them. 🌍
Step 5 · today

Keyboards: writing at the speed of thought ⌨️

Typewriters put letters on keys. Computers turned each letter into a number the machine stores, so your words can fly to Malaysia — or to your grandmother in another country — in under a second.

Same job, new tools. Cave paint, clay, ink, pixels — the tool keeps changing, but the goal has never changed: keep an idea alive after the speaker stops talking.
